Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind. recently joined with U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy to outline a plan to reduce the over-prescription of opioid painkillers. Murthy notes that across the country, people are given painkillers to recover from surgery – but often in quantities and strengths that can lead to unintentional addiction.
The recent HIV outbreak in southern Indiana has been attributed to shared needles, due in part to a widespread epidemic of opioid addiction. That outbreak spurred Donnelly to address the concerns with new legislation that would solidify best practices for Indiana physicians.
