National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day 2018: Partnering for Health and Hope Following Trauma

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. This month, LookUp, along with many other organizations and individuals, is raising awareness by fighting stigma, providing support, education, and advocacy for mental health.  Each week, we’ll share mental health insights from various community sectors. As part of this awareness month, May 10, 2018 is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.  This year’s national theme is “Partnering for Health and Hope Following Trauma” and will focus on the importance of an integrated approach to caring for the mental health needs of children, youth, and young adults who have experienced trauma, as well as their families. More than 1,100 communities and 170 national collaborating organizations and federal programs will organize local Awareness Day activities and events around the country.

Did you know:

  • 36% of children ages 0-17 in Indiana have 1-2 ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
  • Nearly 1 in 6 Indiana children have experienced 1 or more ACEs
  • 21.3% of Indiana high school students have a parent who served time in jail
  • More than 1 in 10 Hoosier children ages 0-17 have lived with someone who was mentally ill or suicidal
  • Adversity, trauma, and stress have significant effects on a child’s social, emotional, & cognitive development
  • Stressed brains do not learn the same as brains that feel safe, can emotionally regulate, & feel connection
  • All behavior is a form of communication
  • We should use the term “stress-behavior” rather than saying bad behavior or a misbehavior.  This will help us shift our lens to understand the root cause of behavior and therefore also shift how we respond.
