Opening of the NEAT Clinic (Naloxone Education, Access & Training Clinic)

OVERDOSE.  This is a scary reality for more and more in our community.

Per the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health, we have experienced a significant increase in the number of opioid overdoses in the last few months:

January-March 2016: 141 Overdoses
January-March 2017: 259 Overdoses

In response and to improve access to naloxone, the Department of Health has opened the NEAT Clinic (Naloxone Education, Access & Training Clinic) during which a friend or family member of an at-risk person will be trained on how to recognize an overdose and administer naloxone. For simplicity for the patient, they will be prescribed Narcan 4 mg nasal spray and be encouraged to use their usual pharmacy to fill the prescription.

The hope is the NEAT clinic will be utilized to decrease the number of accidental overdoses we are seeing in this community – A recent local accidental overdose death study revealed that the average person who died was a young, employed person.
